Today we're highlighting one of our fave 2025 jewellery trends: Old English Jewellery. This script design may remind you of old-world surroundings, however this modern version of this typeface is now popular. Continue reading to learn more about the Old English jewellery trend and its origins.

What is Old English Writing?

Old English writing, commonly known as Blackletter or Gothic script, was a script style used in Western Europe from the 12th to 17th centuries. This text form was abandoned when printing presses became more common because Blackletter was more difficult to read and copy on the presses. This gave way to more modern lettering for everyday usage, but Old English type is being used in other ways today. Museums and collectors all across the world include original examples of Old English lettering. Some displays feature works from various centuries, demonstrating how long this typeface was utilized.

Where did the trend come from?

Old English lettering may be dead in ordinary literature and signage (unless you're in a medieval theme park), but it's still extensively employed in other contexts. Blackletter style is used in some of the most well-known company and brand logos. Some use it to make their brands appear more established, such as the beer brand Corona, while others use it to provide a sense of fantasy, such as the Walt Disney Company. It is also a common style for newspaper brands in the United States and the United Kingdom, including the New York Times and The Telegraph.

These styles have trickled down into more mainstream businesses, with black lettering appearing on record covers, apparel, and even celebrities.

How to Wear Old English Jewellery Trend

When you think about Old English jewelry, you may believe it is only for one type of appearance, yet it can be the distinctive item for any style. Adding an Old English necklace or bracelet is an easy way to achieve that look.

Statement piece

Wear your name in Old English style with a smart dress to keep things simple and classic. A personalized Old English name plate necklace is the simplest method to get this appearance and will be a unique addition to your collection. Wear a little black dress, a block colour playsuit, or a plunging neckline to highlight your jewelry.

Layered

If you want to add some glitter and interest to your wardrobe, consider layering an Old English Necklace with other necklace types. We like to layer a chain or choker with a medium Old English necklace and a longer length pendant. This combination would look excellent with a casual layered dress in the summer, such as a simple tank top and blazer, or over a plain sweatshirt in the winter.

Subtle and Causal

Like the Old English style but want something more delicate? Why not choose only an initial necklace. You can choose between a single or double initial necklace and a metal that complements your taste. These pendant necklaces look great with any attire, from casual to dressy. Wear a low-cut top to highlight your style, or if you're covering your breast, make sure the fabric is basic rather than patterned so your jewelry can stand out.
